On 4 March 1999, RootsWeb was mentioned in an article by staff reporter Edward Harris, "The Web Finds Long- Lost Ancestors Through Online Genealogical Tools," which appeared on p. B-10 of the Boston edition of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL. RootsWeb also was mentioned this week by MSNBC in a blurb at: . * * * IBSSG. In yet another of its shameless bids for publicity, the frolicsome flock of descendants of blackguards known as the International Black Sheep Society of Genealogists (IBSSG) this week bestowed upon your blushing editors the coveted Bo Peep award. We weep. * * * INTERNET RELAY CHAT (IRC). To learn about IRC, read the Help pages at . You'll find a chart to help you convert a meeting time to your own time zone at , and a meeting schedule at . Just a note to let the people out there know how successfully using the RootsWeb Surname List works. I got e-mail from someone from Oklahoma to let me know he had traced my family name back to England. He called me and has filled in all the blanks. Don't get down on yourself. If you can't find someone, let someone find you. Thanks for the system. Carol Benning * * * Last year I found a fellow on the Yorkshire mailing list with the same surname as my wife, HOLLINDALE. His only address was at his university, to which my wife wrote. Oone day we received the results of some research that he had done in answer to my wife's questioning. Then, last October we were in York and spent two nights with him and his wife and had a wonderful time. He and my wife concluded that they are third cousins, having had the same great-great-grandfather. I have also made many contacts for my own surname, JELF. I have a family member who I am still trying to find today. Her name was Laura FRENCH and she lived in the home of my aunt Mildred MILLSPAUGH. There are few of us left. G. Lawrence Jelf * * * Thought I would share with you the gratitude of our family for the times we have been able to connect with "cousins" throughout the U.S. partially through the postings on RootsWeb. The most recent example allowed us to find descendants of one of our lines not previously known to us. A cousin named John DULING posted a query looking for information about Martha TEMPLER and Hezekiah CLEMENTS/CLEMONS. Martha Templer is a sister to my fourth great- grandfather, Thomas Templer. They were two of seven or eight children of James Templer and Martha Huff of Loudoun County, Virginia. We had previously made contact with only three of these children's lines. Now we are four and hoping for more (Templer Family Page ). Thanks again for the wonderful services your organization is providing. Charles E. Templer * * * * * LETTER TO THE EDITORS. Dear Rootsweb: My husband works at TWA and one of its employees died. When the employee started working there he was unmarried and had listed as his beneficaries his mother and brother. Later he married, and his mother and brother died. The insurance would not release any of the money to his wife. My husband asked if I could find a record of the death of these two people. I found the mother on the Social Security Death Index, but could not find the brother. I wrote to the Northern California RootsWeb Coordinator and through RootsWeb was able to find the death record of the brother. I think these two ladies, Sandra Harris and Colleen, are angels. They deserve their wings. They found this death record in less than two days. I have a sign behind my desk that reads "The happiest people are those who have invested their time in others." Thanks again to RootsWeb and all those who help them. I appreciate your time and efforts. Phyllis Murphy * * * * * MAILING LISTS. For an index to most user mailing lists hosted by RootsWeb, visit .
