(Translation: Sandy was one of the managers of ROOTS-L back when it was hosted by Apple.) Although it's almost a week later, I still can't string words into sentences without tearing up. Sandy was always patient, positive, tireless. She worked with ROOTS-L, GEN-NEWBIE-L, USBIOG-L, and several surname lists. We have some pictures on line, a note from her family, and her obituary. If you'd like to say farewell to Sandy, please stop by: Karen Isaacson * * * THE ROOTSWEB HELPDESK is celebrating its first birthday this week. The HelpDesk went live on 18 March 1998. There have been about 12,000 postings on the HelpDesk Message Board, or about 6,000 queries, since then. In addition to those who've received special help, more than 77,000 individuals have used the HelpDesk FAQs (answers to frequently asked questions) during the same period. Just had to let you know that I've been looking for a living Irish relative since 1959, when my grandmother died. It turns out that she, too, had crossed the pond, and is living in California, not too far from me. I've been online for two years looking and she just wandered into my e-mail one day via a Surname List. RootsWeb is great! Ann M. Patterson * * * I have a success story resulting directly from our project that I thought you might like to hear about. On March 1, 1999 I started an obituary board through GenConnect. I immediately e-mailed my cousin Jim. Within two hours Jim had put 40 obituaries online. I teased him that I got so many notification notices from the board I wished I hadn't told him. On March 6 Jim forwarded the following message that he had received: Dear Mr. Miller, Sometimes the way things happen is just breathtaking! I have spent the better part of the day trying my minimal genealogy skills searching Colorado and Iowa records for family information. I had hoped that any of the names I might try might at least encourage me -- just a crumb, a shred of information. It has been a day of frustration, dead ends, "records lost," and lack of knowledge on how to make the system work, to nearly the point of tears. According to the Internet, neither I nor my husband have ever had any relatives. I did leave in frustration, but the combination of being snowed in, a husband sick for a week, and not much on television brought me back for a final attempt. I was searching for information on Elijah Tompkins. I can't imagine whatever brought you to post the obituary of Mary (Pierce) TOMPKINS on the first of this month. I can't imagine that you would know what having this information means to me -- unless you have also searched for information and were bruised from hitting the proverbial brick wall (-- and if I had searched a week ago...!) I assume that the time you spent last week was a gift, the gift that a volunteer gives. I hardly know how to thank you enough for what you have given me. Without the excitement that is making my hands shake right now, I might have just given this whole project up. But now I can try to find more information on Elijah. I can search for Mary's family in Bureau County, Illinois. Until I find out those facts I will think of the description of her that you brought to me. She sounds in that description not unlike her remarkable granddaughter, a woman who was loving, and who treasured my husband when he was a little boy and her grandbaby. You can't know the appreciative thoughts that are coming to you. Volunteering is a thankless job unless someone says thank you! Sincerely, Sharen Celia Davis Clarke County, Iowa GenWeb Webmaster * * * While searching one day through the surnames in the RootsWeb Surname List, I decided to try one that I had not tried in quite a while. After typing it in I actually got a match. First time in three years. So I wrote a note to the person researching that name, asking if they knew the names I was looking for. She answered that they were her grandparents. I have now been in touch with five cousins, I had not seen any of them in 25 years and three I had never seen since they were born after my last trip to Wisconsin. It sure pays to check those names out in the surname searching utility. At least for me it has this year. John C. Quigley II Listowner: DWINELL-L@rootsweb.com * * * I have read your RootsWeb messages for some time now and used Surname research (RootsWeb Surname List) for my family name, tracing a branch of a U.S. citizen AGENA's spouse back to Germany. By now this is at least the fifth time that such contacts developed and information flew back and forth between Europe and North America and extended my database. Too, I got information about an unknown daughter of one of the families I am researching, born 1581 and married 1600 in Hamburg where I live, . . . This is just a little news, which may encourage others. Helmut-H-Agena@gmx.de in Hamburg * * * I, too, praise RootsWeb for finding relatives. Within days after subscribing and posting, a distant relative from Virginia discovered me and replied. She referred me to another two unknown distant relatives living in Oregon and Texas. Recently I was discovered by another unknown relative living in New Mexico. Wow. I wonder if winning the lottery is this exciting? Four living relatives and I thought my few immediate ones living within my own town were my only ones. Thanks, RootsWeb. Carol Page Young, New Braunfels, Texas * * * * * LETTER TO THE EDITORS. Seeing the article on glassblowers in the UK in "Rootsweb Review" made me wonder whether anyone knows of someone indexing early clothiers in the UK. I have a number of ancestors in that trade from the 1400s to 1600s and would appreciate knowing about any available resources. Thanks for the wonderful job you do. Judith Brega McMahon * * * May I suggest that you publish the RootsWeb message about not accepting HTML or enriched text on RootsWeb mailing lists? Edward Dutton [Good idea; thanks, Edward. The gist of the message is that RootsWeb mailing lists accept only plain text mail. That means HTML or Enriched Text and a few other formats cannot be posted to RootsWeb mailing lists. Some mail programs are not capable of handling special formats. Different mail programs handle special formats in different ways. HTML messages pose problems for digested mailing lists. HTML-ified mail places an extra burden on RootsWeb's already overworked machines. Eds.] * * * * * MAILING LISTS. For an index to most user mailing lists hosted by RootsWeb, visit . New ones are constantly being dreamed up, pleading that you forward them to every one you know. These hoax messages typically warn of disaster if you even read a suspect e-mail message. The truth is, there's no way that simply reading an ASCII (text-only) message could spread a virus to your computer, because text messages cannot be infected. However, files attached to a harmless e-mail message could be hazardous. Use common sense: watch where you get your downloads, be wary of anything that seems too good to be true, and keep a backup of your essential data files. To reduce the spread of such hoaxes, and to avoid annoying other people, do not spread such warnings unless you have verified their accuracy.
