Evelyn Hoffman's story in the RootsWeb Review of June 17, 1999 prompted me to write about mine. I grew up hearing that I was somehow related to two U.S. Presidents -- Wm. Henry HARRISON and his grandson, Benjamin HARRISON. When I lived in Richmond, Virginia in 1987, I learned that was the HARRISON family home and tried to find my roots. I didn't get very far. When I returned to Oklahoma in 1995 to care for my aging parents, I asked them about it, but didn't learn much. Mother only knew her grandmother as Nettie B., who was born a HARRISON, married a BAILEY, Mother's maiden name, and then a KEMP by the time my mother was born. She had a sister named Sarah, who married a HATCHETT. That was all Mother could tell me, except that she used to play on the porch while the adults recounted how they were related to the HARRISON presidents. Mother "didn't know those people," so she was not interested. She still isn't. I resumed my family search last September and joined several RootsWeb lists. Besides those surname lists (except for HATCHETT), I joined the Caddo County, Oklahoma list and the OKGEN list, where I met the friendliest and most helpful people in the world. What can I say? -- they're OKies! Soon, I got an offer of a look-up from Jill Pulley in Arkansas, where I learned my grandfather was born. She hit the jackpot for me and found proof of my great-grandmother's real name -- Nipsa Jane. The mystery of the KEMP family down the street from my mother's childhood home in Gracemont, Caddo County, Oklahoma was solved, and I had my great-grandparents' names and a sister of my grandfather, about whom Mother knew nothing. But there it stopped again. In November 1998, my almost 92-year-old daddy fell and broke his back and died 42 days later. Without the love and support of my wonderful OKGEN friends, who wanted a daily report of his progress, it would have been a devastating time for me. I knew he wanted to go, but it was still a shock when the Dr. called me at 11:30 p.m. on Dec. 24th to tell me Daddy was gone. His body was due to be sent to medical facilities in Oklahoma City, as he and Mother both had desired. My loving husband and I were the only family members to go see him again after his death. I said my good-byes with many tears and then I exclaimed, "Now you better help me with my genealogy!" I kissed him and left. Six days later, at Daddy's memorial service, a cousin placed in my hands 40 pages of genealogy that I had not known existed. It contained about 200 surnames and almost 600 names of family members on my mother's side -- including more than 60 HARRISONs. I still don't know how we are related to the presidents, but I have proof of life after death. My sweet daddy got busy fast when he got Home and sent an angel to tell my cousin what I had been searching for since 1987. And he didn't stop there. I have found more connections since then and learned I am related to at least four members of my RootsWeb lists. I have since met people who knew my daddy when he was just a boy. Thanks, RootsWeb, for making the search pleasant and bringing so many loving, helpful people together to help one another. T. A. Does anyone have access to parish registers for Ludford Magna? I'm looking for baptisms for children of Robert and Ann FRITH or FIRTH between 1835 and 1843. I believe there may be John around 1835 and Ann Maria around 1838 and possibly at least one more? Both parents died during 1842 but I don't know whether the children survived. Thanks for your help. Sheila Richards 10 July 02:42 GMT. Hello Sheila, Yesterday I received a birth certificate for who I thought was my great-great-grandmother only to prove it wrong, as the marriage certificate came earlier and I realized I had the wrong one. Here is the good news for you: Mary Ann FRITH born 19 Oct 1841 in Ludford Magna parents Robert and Ann FRITH. I would be more than happy to send you the certificate of your relation. I could not believe this happened, another plus for the list. I am still hunting for my Mary Ann FRITH. Kind regards, Mary Turnbull, Surrey BC Canada * * * I received an e-mail through the WILKIE mailing list that has unlocked a door that has been shut for many decades. Family in South Australia always wondered why Rachel WAY (born 1815 in Somerset, England, died 1895 in South Australia), a daughter of Charles WAY, who became Rachel WILKEY when she married Charles Richard WILKEY, gave many of her children the middle name FRY. This has even led to misinformation that she was Rachel FRY, although both her marriage certificates, first to Charles Richard WILKEY and second to Edward BARNETT, give her father as Charles WAY. Information has come to light through several sources that Rachel was a step-daughter of Nimrod FRY. I am delighted to pass this information on to family. So many erroneous family stories have already started, all trying to prove where the link to FRY came from, but this is the first time someone has quoted dates and places and I think I am finally on to the truth. It comes back to my belief that the more information we are willing to share with as many people as possible the better. Thank you, Don Wilkey, George Paul, and Darren Rainey for the contributions that helped make this possible. Suzanne Maiden * * * * * MAILING LISTS. I have been doing research only since last fall, but found RootsWeb early on, and subscribed. I put queries out in a few places, and read with interest the Review each week. Loved the stories of people finding each other. Last week came not one but two replies to a query in Clark County, Indiana, for the HENDERSON and COLE lines of my grandmother. When it happens, it is so amazing -- I still can't get over it. They knew my family back a long way. Thanks to Richard Pearson (Indiana), Paul and Hazel Henderson (Washington), and Elaine Acosta (Louisiana), I have family information I had thought would take me a long time to get, if ever. I became a contributor recently, and urge everyone to do the same so that the wonderful work that is being done may continue and grow. Think how hard it would be to get the information that is available without this site. Thank you all. Twila Yednock , Ottawa, Illinois * * * Although I'd joined RootsWeb a while back, I'd never subscribed to any of the mailing lists. I just joined a few days ago and the first time I went on, I made a family connection. Through Mari Byers in Rutherford County, Tennessee, I found a fourth cousin still living in the county. Three second cousins and I are traveling there to search our roots this September and have learned that our cousin, Edna Rhea, is looking forward to meeting us as much as we're looking forward to meeting her. I've already learned new information from her such as that "Uncle Nat" used to sing for the Grand Ole Opry. We're all looking forward to learning more. I'm hoping to learn more news about other lines in my family tree through RootsWeb connections, but even if I don't, this one find has made it all worthwhile. Terry Nance * * * * * HUMOR.
