Do you have a database you would like to share with the worldwide genealogy community? What about your genealogical or historical society? Does it have a database or index to some records (in ASCII format) that would be helpful to others? If so, in most instances, RootsWeb would be proud to host these. (Files that are more suitable for WorldConnect http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com include any compiled records in a database that is stored in a genealogy program and so can be converted easily to a GEDCOM. For an explanation of GEDCOM, see "Using Technology to Dig up Roots" at http://www.rootsweb.com/~rwguide/lesson3.htm ) If you think that you have a database (not your family tree, which you can post at WorldConnect) that would be of value to RootsWeb's users and you would like to share, send a message to Robert Tillman rrti@rootsweb.com and tell him about it. Please do not send the database with the initial message. * * * Due to the overwhelming response of RootsWeb users to Ancestry's free trial offer, the links were very busy and some people might not have gotten through. Thanks for sharing your stories. I am grateful to RootsWeb for sponsoring the wonderful Web site of Elton Lacey, who has published extensive research done on the CORBELLs and other families. I am an only child. My father left when I was a baby. I recently started doing my family tree, without a lot of optimism about my father's side. When I found Elton Lacey's site, I found the names of my father's parents. I found out that Elton is a cousin that my father was the youngest of 12 children. I was amazed since I thought I had no family. A wish has come true thanks to RootsWeb. Thank you. Patricia Corbell Coco779@aol.com * * * When I first started working on the family tree in the 1980s, I got what information I could find through family. In 1993 I obtained a computer and some programs to help me with storing and organizing my information, but using the Internet was not very satisfying as sites were limited on the genealogical front. Just recently my sister-in-law got interested in the family tree and got me started again. Now there are literally thousands of genealogical sites that are available. My husband has never known anything about his family past his grandparents' names (FRIEND and THOMAS) but upon finding RootsWeb, I found some submitted family trees back five generations on the FRIEND side and back three generations on the THOMAS side -- not only trees, but also pictures and cousins. I can't believe our good fortune, I can't believe how wonderful RootsWeb is, and all I can say is thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! Mary Thomas marymt@mail.com * * * Thanks to RootsWeb I found my grandfather after 30+ years of searching. I have been receiving ROOTSWEB REVIEW for over a year now. Sometimes I don't get through all the information, but last week just before deleting the file, I had a feeling to look it over. Almost immediately I saw the link to the California Birth and Death records that recently became available. First I played with the birth records for a minute and looked up my surname in Plumas County and found myself, my brother, and his children. Then I thought about my grandfather. Not long after his two sons were born in 1910 and 1911, he and my grandmother separated and later divorced. He eventually moved away and the family, living in Utah at the time, lost all contact with him. We had heard he was in southern California in the 1940s but we were never able to find any trace of him. Since he was born in 1885, for the last 20+ years we assumed he was dead but could not find anything. Still hoping that we might discover what became of him, I clicked on the link for the California Death Records, entered his name and did a search. Anyone who has visited a Family History Center for even a short time has probably heard those words "It's him!" echoing from somewhere near the microfilm or microfiche readers. This time, my wife came running when she heard those words blasting out of our computer room! With a simple click of the mouse, 30+ years of searching came to an end when his name appeared as one of the 20 or so William KAUFMANs who had died in California since 1940. He lived to be 68 years old and died in 1953. A few more clicks of the mouse, and I ordered a copy of his death certificate from Los Angeles County. The certificate arrived a few days later. Now with some more searching I hope to find some of his second family. Perhaps someone will be able to share with us the latter part of his life. Thanks RootsWeb. We couldn't have found him without you. Bob Kaufman bobnclaire@hotmail.com * * * Often I do not have the time to thoroughly read ROOTSWEB REVIEW, but a couple of weeks ago I had time to scan it. Much to my delight I saw the posting for the California births and deaths records. I had almost given up finding my great uncle in San Francisco, who had the common name of William LARSEN, or so I thought. Stories had it that one of the four brothers who came over from Denmark in 1886 did not change his name to LARSEN. After trying William LARSEN I submitted JOHANSEN and bingo!, he came up as Carl William JOHANSEN. I know it is the correct person, as his mother's maiden name was correct. I have since obtained his obituary from the San Francisco Public Library, and his wife's maiden name from a cemetery employee. I have ordered his death certificate and probate records in hopes of locating additional information and family members. Thank you RootsWeb for all the great information you share with the world. Please send to RWR-Editors@rootsweb.com Who says GEDCOMs make boring reading? I was browsing a GEDCOM on WorldConnect http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com and came across an entry that really had me laughing. WorldConnect has a filtering system to prevent placing information about the living online, thus Mrs. Hell was converted to "Living Hell" in the database. My apology to the GEDCOM owner for poking fun, but I couldn't help getting a chuckle from this one. Sharyl Ferrall ferrall@mtaonline.net * * * "Copy the chart to the Windows clipboard." Ah, now you've lost me. Windows? Is that a genealogy program I haven't met? Don't forget that ROOTSWEB REVIEW goes to an international audience of individuals with a wide variety of hardware and software platforms. Not everyone has some shade of Windows, or even a browser from which material can be cut and pasted. Please try to avoid making unwarranted (and, for many folk, offensive) assumptions. Mostly the RootsWeb Web sites work just fine in the ArcWeb browser on my RISC OS computer (which also supports the very nice graphical genealogy program (Family) which I applaud. It's great to find that the programmers at RootsWeb (no doubt more familiar with Linux than any shade of Windows) think about cross-platform issues. Occasionally I have to use Netscape on a Linux machine to see a site (such as FamilySearch.org), but it irritates the hell out of me when I am obliged to switch platforms. Andy Waddington Family@pennine.demon.co.uk * * * Thanks to RootsWeb posting the California death records, I found a child of my grandfather's second marriage, who had died in Santa Clara County, California, and a person there was kind enough to go to the courthouse, transcribe the death record and provide it to me. This included his daughter's name, who was the informant. This was of great help because when my grandfather married the second time, it seem there was a lack of communication between my father and his father's family. It has been hard to trace my genealogy but it is becoming easier with the help of the records made available by RootsWeb.
