Does your state, province, county, parish, or church have a database available that has not yet been placed on RootsWeb and that you think would be of interest to genealogists and historians? Do you have a database other than your personal family tree (personal genealogies are best posted at WorldConnect http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/ ) that you would like to share that you think would be of value and interest to others? In most cases, RootsWeb would be proud to host them. Please use the data submission form to tell us about such databases: http://userdb.rootsweb.com/submit.html * * * WORLDCONNECT: Global Search Updating http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/ Q. I uploaded my family tree to WorldConnect today. How long does it take to have the names appear on your search listing? A. WorldConnect Global Search is updated once a day although you can access your database instantly, as soon as your file is successfully uploaded. By tomorrow the updated database will be fully searchable. This one-day delay in making the updated database available for a name search gives you an opportunity to ensure that everything in the updated file is displayed as you intended it to be and gives you time to do any needed editing. For additional information about Global Search updating, see: http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/FAQ/wcsubmit9.html http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/FAQ/wcsubmit5.html Also see RootsWeb's Guide to Tracing Family Trees, Guide 3: Using Technology (Software and GEDCOMs) http://www.rootsweb.com/~rwguide/lesson3.htm * * * CALL FOR VOLUNTEER U.S. FEDERAL CENSUS TRANSCRIBERS. Indeed there is, read on.] When I started researching my family history in the early 1980s, I found that my original immigrants to Victoria, Australia, William POBJOY and his wife and children, arrived in 1862 aboard the "Blue Jacket." Everything I had fitted with this. They went to Creswick [a town in the Golden Triangle of Victoria's goldfields], so I started checking out the Creswick and Clunes newspapers. I was a long way from the library and so I started buying them on microfilm, which I cut into manageable lengths and put into microfiche pockets so I could use them on a microfiche viewer. At the same time, on my infrequent visits to the Genealogical Society of Victoria, I started to pick up miscellaneous microfiche. Among these were the "Electoral Polls" and some trade directories. That was when I learned what a pain these were to search. Fine, if you knew where your ancestor was, but if you were just looking on speculation they were particularly difficult. It crossed my mind that someone should index them. That was in 1985, but nothing happened until my husband and I opted for a change in career path and lifestyle in 1993. We moved to Kununurra in Western Australia. From there we were offered work in an Aboriginal community on the edge of the Tanami Desert (and I had thought Kununurra was remote). We were two of five persons of European descent in the community of 170. The heat for most of the year made life outside almost impossible, and so, as I had my own computer and very little social life, I finally set about indexing my newspapers. [See where author lives: http://www1.octa4.net.au/sloneill/saibai/SAIBAI.htm ] The newspapers are a long-term project and as a little light relief and something different to do, I indexed my first trade directory. My thought initially was to publish them on microfiche. The Internet was not high on my priority list as our phone connection just wasn't good enough. Over the years I have released some of my newspaper indexes on microfiche, but there is a limited market and in the meantime I had indexed some years of the counties that were relevant to my family. That amounted to a few, and so I started to buy some more, and I decided to concentrate on the Pigot's Trade Directories of 1830. Unfortunately, not all counties are available for this period, so as I complete all available 1830 directories, I will pad it out with trade directories from the missing counties, from near years. I have continued to work in remote communities, and so still have little or no social life, but fortunately I do enjoy indexing and now I have started to learn how to build basic Web sites so I can put them on line -- courtesy of RootsWeb. My newspaper indices are starting to go up as well, so far for 1859, 1860, and 1861. [NOTE TWO-LINE URL] http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~pobjoyoneill/ CRESWICK.htm At the moment though, all my indexing and looking up is on hold; my microfiche viewer is on strike and needs a new globe. I can't just walk down the street and get a new one, and so I am trying to organise one from Cairns, Queensland, our nearest major town, which is more than 1,000 kilometers away and half a day's travel by plane. As an afterthought, indexing the newspapers has been most helpful in fleshing out my William POBJOY in Creswick in the 1860s. My man was middle-class and involved himself in a lot of things in the town, without being a leading light. He fought with the council, his business burnt down, and most importantly from the newspapers, I discovered the story of his arrival in Australia. I had previously found him and his wife and family arriving in 1862 and had looked no further, but on reading the newspapers, I found that he was returning to Creswick. A little more diligent searching and I found his first arrival in 1859 with William KING. I have not been able to identify William KING's connection, but he is obviously related to William POBJOY's wife, Sophia KING. William POBJOY sailed in 1858 from Liverpool aboard the "Great Britain," leaving his pregnant wife and three sons behind in Newnham Murren, Oxfordshire, living with her parents. I found the testimonial that the town gave him when he left to return to England. This gave me his date of departure and the name of the ship that he went on -- once again the "Great Britain," in May 1861. At a time when the travel time to England was approximately three months, he sailed to Liverpool, traveled to Newnham Murren, picked up his wife and now four sons, and sailed from London, arriving back in Melbourne in January of 1862. The newspapers also told me that he and William KING went to New Zealand in 1863, and from that information I was able to find their actual departure in the unindexed passenger departures. My William came back, unfortunately at the time of his return, the newspaper was in recession because the owner had died in a tragic accident, so I have no mention of his return. [An example from: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/ ~pobjoyoneill/newsppr/INQ5962S.htm (NOTE TWO-LINE URL) ] Strafford, Eliza, Inquest, 27-Apr-1860. An inquest was held on Saturday last at Hammon's store, on the body of Eliza Strafford, commonly known as "Drunken Liz", who died through a self inflicted wound on the throat. For years the unfortunate woman was addicted to drink and led an abandoned life. Dr. Roche, who made the post mortem, deposed to the cause of death, and the jury brought in a verdict in accordance with the evidence. In consequence of the sudden indisposition of our local coroner, Samuel Lewers, Esq, JP, presided at the inquest.] Visit O'Neill's Web pages and view her prodigious work at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~pobjoyoneill/ http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~pobjoyoneill/ She also is the list administrator for: POBJOY-L@rootsweb.com * * * * * MAILING LISTS. We connected with some new people and my Web site got almost 2,000 hits! We got some new people researching their Native American ancestry. Many people believe that our early records among the Native Americans are the best in existence. As a result, I added two new links which describe the mission records 1735-1810 in the Moravian Archives. The entire collection has been filmed on 40 rolls of microfilm.
