Thanks for sharing your stories. A WorldConnect Success Story by Kurt Pickering pickeringenealogist_generalogy@hotmail.com When I started ancestor-hunting in 1998, Mom knew her father's line only as far as his parents, Emery Charles and Ella Mae (EVANS) HODGES. What did she know about them? She said: Emery had been orphaned while crossing the Atlantic when he was about two; their son, her father, was from Joliet, Illinois; Emery died soon after mom was born but that the much-younger Ella Mae lived until mom was about 15; both were at least 75 when they died; the much-younger wife was the daughter of Emery's employer, a wealthy businessman; Emery was also a part-time inventor who held some patents; he spelled his name Emery rather than Emory; and Ella Mae lived the last years of her life in the Kansas City, Kansas, home of her daughter. With that much information, it should have been easy -- yet it proved to be anything but. In the 1900 Illinois census, I found an Emery and an Emory. The rest of each household revealed which was my great-grandfather, but he was listed as born in Indiana. After finding the same in the 1910 and 1920 censuses, I decided Emery was either indeed born in Indiana or unwilling to admit being an immigrant; meanwhile, each census listed Emery as a stoneworker. From an aunt's family Bible I learned that Emery had a brother named Frank. I also found, in a RootsWeb database, that Emery and Ella Mae had married on April 18, 1889, in Champaign County, Illinois. Finally, I found their obituaries and used them for solid death information and projected birth information. Then an Emory C. HODGES popped up in RootsWeb's WorldConnect. It named his wife as Paulina Wood; while no one in my family had any clue that Emery had been married before, I liked it immediately -- I'd always wondered how Emery had lived to be a 35-year-old bachelor before marrying a 22-year-old. As I e-wrote the provider, Nancy Correll, I remember feeling somewhat hopeful but more curious about how this lead would fall through. Nancy, saying that data had come mostly from her father-in-law, Ray Correll, promised to check with him and get back to me. When she did, she said he told her that their Emory didn't seem to be my Emery but I was welcome to him if I wanted him . They believed their Emory died about 1887 because he was in Terra Haute, Indiana city directories in 1883, 1884, and 1887, but not in 1888 -- which did include a Mrs. Paulina HODGES. However, he was listed as a dealer in monuments -- certainly an arguable fit with the stoneworker census listings for my Emery. Furthermore, their Emory's history ended just as mine -- about whom I knew nothing before age 35 except his state of birth -- began. A friend in Indiana turned up a marriage license for Emery and Paulina WOOD, from which we learned that he was 29 (exactly the right age to be my Emery), she was 41 (hmm), and that she was a Kentucky native, maiden name WALDEN, who'd been married once before. I'm thinking "It's gotta be -- but can I have some proof?" and Nancy is thinking "probably coincidence" when she mentions having a photo of three HODGES brothers: Ray's direct ancestor John T., along with Frank and Emery. That reminded me that I had some photocopies of wallet-size snapshots of Emery late in life (looking remarkably like Mark Twain) and one of him young (just remarried, I now think). So Nancy and I each made high-quality copies of what we had and mailed them to each other. I opened hers and said "That's him." I wasn't there, of course, but I have the impression that she did the same. "That hair," she e-told me later, "and those eyes!" Since then, her father-in-law has gotten a computer. In his first e-mail to me, he mentioned recalling a visit from a HODGES relative named Beulah and a visit to an Arkansas fishing resort he thought was owned by a HODGES. Well, my grandpa's youngest sister was indeed named Beulah, and his younger brother Earl indeed owned Crystal Cove Resort for many years. I visited there as a boy myself. We've since found that Emery and Paulina's marriage ended in an ugly divorce; we don't know what became of her but it's clear that our Emerys are one and the same. This not only provides us with new cousins, but also -- because of Ray and Nancy's work -- it pushes my HODGES pedigree all the way to William HODGES, born circa 1764 in Virginia. RootsWeb, via WorldConnect and in many other ways, has been the single most useful tool in my online ancestor quest. * * * SIBLINGS REUNITED AFTER SEVEN DECADES by Faye Ball Edwards luvinmom@gloryroad.net Thank you Rootsweb.com and Ancestry.com for the service you provide families around the world. I can't help but cry, every time I see the joy on the faces of my cousins, John, Ethel, and Barbara. I am so glad that God used me to give blessing to these people in the winter of their lives. Thank you for being there, and providing me with the resources needed to bring them home! The database in question was WorldConnect. I ran upon it through Ancestry.com. At the time that I was searching, I typed in the names Barbara HATCHER and/or Beverly HATCHER at the Ancestry.com search page. When the results were returned, one of the options offered was: "search for Barbara HATCHER (or Beverly HATCHER, whichever I was searching) at RootsWeb." When that link was accessed, the RootsWeb Metasearch page loaded and from that point, I entered the name again and searched from that page. When the list of results loaded, it contained links to several sites with the HATCHER surname, first name of Barbara or Beverly, but the WorldConnect site seemed the most logical since it gives results that have the first name and surname together as one person. Choosing the WorldConnect results was the right thing, because the HATCHER genealogy of Barbara and Beverly, Warren and Eula, loaded right before my eyes! I almost had to go to the hospital because I got so excited I started to hyperventilate, at 3 a.m.! I had searched RootsWeb on previous occasions, but either I didn't know how to use the site to my full advantage or maybe I had tried searching there before the information was posted by the other HATCHER researchers. I'm just so excited. I still have lots of other mysterious goings on in my family, so I'm not leaving. I'll be using the databases many more times. I've even become kind of popular around our hometown as the genie detective. I've been contacted by several people asking me to search for clues to their mysterious pasts. I can't get enough of it! [On 10 June 2001, THE DAILY DISPATCH, Henderson, North Carolina, published "Reunited, They Feel So Good: Internet Search Helps End Seven Decades of Family Separation," which begins: "John T. OWEN, Sr., 73, of Henderson and Ethel LUMPKIN, 78, of Oxford have waited 72 years to find their twin sisters" and relates the background of the family's separation and some details of the search that culminated in their recent reunion. "The twins, born in 1929, were raised by foster parents who took them when their mother died a few days after giving birth. `We never saw them because my mama was in the hospital,' Lumpkin said of the twins. `My mother lived four days. The woman in the room with her begged her for the twins. She didn't have any children.' Their mother was Rosa Ball OWEN, 29. . . Their father, John Lee OWEN, was 60 years old. He died of pneumonia a year after his wife's death. The woman in the hospital room with the dying mother was Eula Bowman HATCHER. She and her husband, Warren HATCHER, were from Missouri. They were in their 50s, and had no children. The HATCHERs took the twins and lived for a short time in Virginia before going back to Missouri. Then no one heard anything about them for more than seven decades."] * * * * * MAILING LISTS. My mother fell into a coma in 1967 as she was giving birth to my younger sister. We were living up in New York back then. My stepfather left me to live with my grandfather back in Savannah. Not long ago, I found out that my mother never recovered from the coma and that she died in 1981. My stepfather never let my mother's family know about what was going on. Last month, on RootsWeb, while checking online cemetery records, I finally found that my mother was buried in Riverside National Cemetery in California. I then e-mailed the administration of National Cemetery and the director e-mailed me back giving me all the information about where my dear mother is buried. He was also very nice to e-mail me four pictures of her grave. God bless his heart, I now have something to say about my mother. My wife, my six kids, and I live in Reunion Island in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Next time we have the opportunity to go back to the U.S.A., the children will have a grandmother to visit, thanks to RootsWeb. The recent story about the person who stopped into a country gas station and was told of an old hidden cemetery containing his ancestors brought me to tears.
