Does your state, province, county, parish, or church have a database available that has not yet been placed on RootsWeb and that you think would be of interest to genealogists and historians? Do you have databases –- other than your personal family tree (genealogies should be posted at WorldConnect: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/) -- that you would like to share that you think would be of value and interest to others? In most cases, RootsWeb would be proud to host them. Please use the new data submission form to submit such databases: http://userdb.rootsweb.com/submit/ * * * RootsWeb's WORLDCONNECT contains more than 77 million entries and new GEDCOMs are added daily. Search WorldConnect and upload your own GEDCOM(s) to http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/ WorldConnect recently moved to new servers, which allow faster. searching and uploading of files. Some enhancements have been added also. From the global search results you will notice some clickable icons. These will take you directly to pedigrees (brown pedigree icon) and descendancy reports (blue head icon) in just one click. In the new Genealogy Tools area of WorldConnect you can now access such options or views as: Index, Individual, Descendancy (Outline) Register (a genealogy report), Pedigree, and Ahnentafel. Where applicable, the Genealogy Tools provide a link with an option to "Search WorldConnect." This takes you to pages in other WorldConnect files that match the individual on the page from which you are conducting a search. Also, where appropriate, you will find a link where you may add a Post-em Note. There's a new printer-friendly version for the various reports. * * * ROOTSWEB'S GUIDE TO TRACING FAMILY TREES (RWGuide) where you will find answers to many of your research questions. http://rwguide.rootsweb.com/ It may take more than a ship passenger list to find your gateway ancestors. Thanks for sharing your stories. REUNION. I am so happy to be able to use your Web site for research, it has helped my family more then you can imagine. My father was placed in an orphanage as well as his siblings, And in using your Web site I found two of his brothers and one sister, It was a very happy reunion, and our family is now extended. --The St Germain Family. Shauna St.Germaine shauna@mail.riverview.net LEAFS and BRANCHES. I am a volunteer of RootsWeb's Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness (RAOGK) http://raogk.rootsweb.com/ . I was asked to find a death certificate and obituary notice for a John Marshall Callaham who died in San Diego in 1989. First I checked the California death records on Rootsweb at http://vitals.rootsweb.com/ca/death/search.cgi and found only one by that name listed and the date of death matched. The death certificate said he was a retired Marine, services held at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego, and that he was cremated. When I checked the cemetery records, a John Marshall Callaham Jr. came up as being buried there in 1968. Evidently I had stumbled onto his son. Since the son was not listed under California deaths, yet was buried at a military cemetery, I suspected he might have been killed during the Vietnam War. At the Vietnam Casualty Search Page http://www.no-quarter.org/ I was able to confirm this. I found out his military ID number, rank, marital status, how he died, etc. But, more important, I had found another leaf to add to this branch of the family tree. --Judy Powell judy-powell@home.com * * * FROM ROOTSWEB REVIEW'S BOTTOMLESS MAILBAG Several readers sent comments about the Laura Ingalls Wilder page http://rwguide.rootsweb.com/notable/laura.htm mentioned in last week's Review, and some found familial connections as well: Yes, I enjoyed the Laura Ingalls Wilder page. My husband's 8th- great-grandmother was Elizabeth Ingalls, and I always wondered if he was related to Laura Ingalls Wilder. When the link was presented in the Rootsweb Review (Vol. 4, No. 36, 5 Sept. 2001), I checked it out and found out that he is indeed related to her. They are 8th cousins, twice removed. (Elizabeth Ingalls was a sister to Laura Ingalls Wilder's 6th-great-grandfather Henry.) Thanks so much for presenting that link so I could answer that question once and for all. It was pretty exciting! --Sharleen Newton twinbabya@home.com How completely shocked I was to go to the Laura Ingalls Wilder genealogy link listed in the last newsletter! I began to read it purely for historical reasons, but was overwhelmed to find out that I am related to Laura through her paternal ancestor, Ann Tripp [wife of Edmund Ingalls]. Thank you for providing a clue to me to search with. I have been able to add entire branches to my family tree now thanks to RootsWeb Review. --Jan Longtin Vincent janvincent_1313@yahoo.com HUMOR ELICITS MORE THAN LAUGHS. Mr. Dostie's points in (RootsWeb Review Vol. 4, No. 36, 5 Sept. 2001 - Humor: An Archivist's 10 Commandments) are fair comment, and well made, but as someone who gets very infrequent chances to access most resources (Darwin is 4,000 kilometers, about 2,500 miles, from the nearest major genealogical archive), I must say that every minute's access to the archive is precious. We value your resources, and we value the archivists for their patience and assistance, when either or both are forthcoming. But there is a serious side to this, as well: The best resources I have seen are in Tasmania: Its economy has been in difficulty for years, but many Australians have ancestral connections there. The archives and libraries are full of visitors from far away. We all eat, and need accommodations. In short, we provide private enterprise with an industry, rather than just consume government services. In Tasmania, the archives are extensive and very accessible. Lots of researchers choose to make repeated trips to Hobart to plumb the depths of what is available. The fact that Tasmania is inexpensive and has numerous other attractions also help make these decisions. What surprises me is that many governments consider genealogists as an unwelcome intrusion, especially when they come from outside the jurisdiction. Another, but less common, attitude is that we are geese, all with golden eggs to lay. In my view, a well- considered approach by government to genealogists will see more resources allocated to making archives accessible. This will provide local employment, at least partly paid for by outsiders; genealogy is an export, in economic terms. The spin-offs for private enterprise are potentially significant: Archives are an attractant that may tip the balance when a family decides where to holiday. While the "genie" is in the archives the ungrateful beneficiaries of his/her labours can be off sight- seeing or whatever. This is the message that archivists ought to be conveying to governments; and which genealogists ought to be backing up, whenever we get the chance. --Peter Thomas, Darwin, Australia pmthomas@bigpond.com * * * * * NEW SURNAME MAILING LISTS (Editor's Note: The following are mailing lists not Web pages) Albanese Bjorn, Bordessa Brown-Eng-NTH -- The BROWN surname in Northamptonshire, England Challenger, Cooper-ENG, Coriell Dingley, Dishion Foresteire Green-Australia Holtzheuser James-PA, Jeffcock Krapf McNey, McNurlen Nooner Pier Rhymer, Rohrbaugh, Ryckman Seidensticker, Seiders Tetley Volbrecht Wagg, Wegg, Wheildon Zacherl NEW ETHNIC AND SPECIAL INTEREST MAILING LISTS AR-Cemeteries-Submitters--A list that will be used for the submitters and volunteers on the AR-CEMETERIES mailing list Web site OK-Cemetery-Preservation--Discussing and sharing of information regarding the preservation of historic Oklahoma cemeteries OK-Civil-War--Discuss Civil War events and the roles played by Oklahoma and its people NEW REGIONAL MAILING LISTS Australia-New-Zealand--For Australia and New Zealand plus Islands * * * ABOUT MAILING LISTS.
