CONNECTING THROUGH ROOTSWEB ------------------------------- Thanks for sharing your stories. I can't tell you enough how wonderful your project is and what great results I have gotten. Can you believe out of the millions of people in this world, I have contacted a direct family member that I did not even know existed. I've gone back five generations now and most information was obtain through RootsWeb. I commend everyone who is involved. --Germane Smith I just read the article in RootsWeb Review [26 Sept. 2001] about the gentleman who has compiled the database of German immigrants and your comments about genealogist willing to share their compiled data. My wife and I have always loved going to used book shops as we love books. Since we've started researching our families' genealogy we now look for family history books, family Bibles and any other books that might help us in our research. One thing we try to do is when we find a book or especially family Bibles that don't help us but might help someone else we buy the book/Bible then go to that family's surname on the various genealogy sites and post a description of the book/Bible. If anyone responds we do look-ups or if they want the book/Bible we send it to them for what we paid for the book/Bible plus shipping. If the book was too expensive to buy we still make an online post. When someone responds, we send them the book/Bible info with the store's name and phone number so they can contact the store and purchase it if they want. The responses from people that we've sent books to has been great. --Jack Cardwell 3. FROM ROOTSWEB REVIEW'S BOTTOMLESS MAILBAG -------------------------------------------- RIGHT UNDER OUR NOSES. I had hit the proverbial brick wall. I actually hit it a decade ago, and further research has just enforced the idea that I don't know, and neither did anyone else, who was the father of my Johnathan SWARTHOUT. I had been completely through the indexes of the Burton Historical Collection [Detroit, Michigan Public Library] at least four times in the 10 years I'd been working there, combing each section of the catalogue for my elusive ancestors. I finally broke down. I had purposely not looked at the volumes of Bible records transcribed, indexed and carefully bound over the years by the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) [because] they were Michigan records, copied and certified in Michigan. My father's family had lived in central New York for almost two centuries, settling in the late 1700s. His father had farmed part of the old homestead more than 60 years ago and my dad was born in the area and lived there until going to college. The cemeteries were filled with the descendants, almost all of them being accounted for in the rows of granite and marble in three different locations. I located the thin blue volume on the shelf, took it over to the table and flipped through the pages. One of the archivists looked over at that point and said, "I've seen that look before. You found something!" I nodded, light-headed by what I was looking at. It was the transcription of my Johnathan's family Bible; or more correctly, the Bible belonged to Johnathan's first wife, Mary. Mary's first husband was a Nathaniel [--?--], the individual many had told me was Johnathan's father, but I needed some kind of proof. The property deed they often referenced just didn't say what they wanted it to say. So how did this Bible get to Michigan? Amy, Johnathan's second wife and his widow, brought it with her when she moved to Ohio with her youngest daughter. One of her grandsons evidently inherited the Bible and took it with him when he moved to Michigan, where in 1932, the DAR recorded the information. The Bible answered many questions, such as, "Why is Mary buried right next to Nathaniel, even though her gravestone say she is the wife of Johnathan?" I still don't know who Johnathan's father was, but I do know that Nathaniel was not. It just goes to show you, don't neglect the things you don't think have anything to do with your family, because you really don't know! --Mark Swarthout http://swarthoutfamily.org/ KUDOS FOR GUIDES. Thank you so much for an incredible piece on conducting research in religious sources! [http://rwguide.rootsweb.com/lesson17.htm] I have never written to say thank you before but this was incredible! --Lee Folino I just found this site this morning [http: //rwguide.rootsweb.com/]. Love all the graphics. I am forwarding the URL on to my husband as some of this stuff is great for American history. Also he actually, at the students request, teaches an elective class on genealogy. Your site would be super for them. Last year after first day of searching the Web a little 6th-grade girl told him, "Dr. Schrupp, I didn't find my WHOLE family today." Thank you RootsWeb people! --MaryCarol 4. NEW ROOTSWEB MAILING LISTS ----------------------------- (Editor's Note: The following are mailing lists not Web pages) ABOUT MAILING LISTS. HUMOR: ---------- BY HOOK OR CROOK. In reply to 19-26 Sept. RWR. humor "GRANNY WAS A WHAT?" Meredith McGrath informs us: The follow-up note about "GRANNY WAS A WHAT?" triggered a 10- year-old memory. When I was visiting in Seattle, Washington I took the Underground Tour. On it you learn all sorts of interesting facts, including why the census showed a disproportionate number of seamstresses -- walking the street. There is an article that summarizes it better than I could at: http://www.sacbee.com/travel/bigticket/072299seattle.html L.C. writes: The humor regarding "Granny being a hooker" was good, and it was nice to see you picked up on the textile worker being referred to as a hooker. To continue this string, I would like to add that there is a position on a rugby team known as hooker. In fact, I dated a girl (back in the '70s [we assume he means 1970s—Ed.]) who played for Chesapeake Rugby Club in Towson, Maryland, and she was a hooker. She was a 100% All- American female, but could she do well in a scrum.(You non-rugby players will have to look that up in your Funk and Wagnalls.) [Numerous readers wrote to inform us that the term hooker dates from the American Civil War(1861-1865) referring to the camp followers of General Joseph Hooker's army. Actually this term appeared in print at least once in 1859, but it was popularized during the War Between the States.—Ed.] 9.
