NEWS AND NOTES ------------------ 1a. WAGONS--HO! SPOTLIGHT ON POTTAWATTAMIE COUNTY. As wagon trains arrived in Council Bluffs, the local newspaper -- the "Frontier Chronicle" -- reported the news and included names of the men on the trains and where they came from. If your ancestors were heading west for the California Gold Rush in the spring of 1849, they might have passed through this area and their names might have been recorded. Check the newspaper extracts here in this ongoing project. It is claimed that more people went through Kanesville/Council Bluffs, Iowa on their way west than through St. Joseph and Independence, Missouri combined. http://www.rootsweb.com/~iapottaw/WgnTrnIndx.htm This Web site is part of the IAGenWeb Project and the USGenWeb Project. THANKSGIVING POSTCARDS. http://postcards.rootsweb.com/thank.htm TURKEY TALES: http://www.petuniapress.com/turkey3.htm 2. CONNECTING THROUGH ROOTSWEB Thanks for sharing your stories. JUST THE FACTS. By Jo-Ann Croft and Ann McClean who posted on NORFOLK-L mailing list. From the "Cambridgeshire Times," Friday October 26 2001: REGIMENT'S SEARCH FOR OLD SOLDIERS. SIXTY years after 26 officers were commissioned in the Cambridgeshire Regiment, their scrolls have been unearthed. And the regiment's association is anxious to find the owners before the end of the year. Association president Lt-Col Walter Badcock said scrolls were normally forwarded to the officers as soon as they were commissioned. The officers would have been commissioned between 1939 and 1941. "After that, the regiment's two battalions were sent to the Far East:" "It's a mystery why these did not follow the normal routine," he said. "But it was war-time and there might have been a delay in signing and issuing them." If the scrolls, which were found at the headquarters of the Royal Anglian Regiment in Bury St Edmunds, are not claimed before 31 December, they will be placed in the county archives."Once there, it would be difficult to get them out again," he said. Relatives of one of the officers have been tracked down, but the rest not yet traced are: Arthur ATTFIELD, Tom BAXTER, Hugh CHIVERS, Cyril DERBY, Stephen DUNFORD, Frank ELWORTHY, Thomas OHNIONS, Brian FOOT, Henry GADD, Joseph GOODCHILD, William GURTEEN, George HILL, Frank HOCKEY, Bernard HOWARD, Roger HOWARD, Maurice HUMPHRIES, Godfrey KENT, Christopher MARRIOTT, Eric PRICE, Frank RAYBONE, Ronald SPOONER, Henry TILLEY, Richard TOWNLEY, William UNWIN, and Eric WILSON. If any of the men, or their heirs wish to claim the scrolls, they should apply in writing to Lt-Col Badcock at 16 Gresley Way, March, Cambs PEl5 8QA, U.K. REUNION OF THE ROSIES Thanks to Cathie I chair a committee for a reunion of the "ROSIES." These women worked in the shipyards, airplane factories, and other non-traditional jobs during World War II when their fathers, brothers, husbands, and sons went off to fight. HUMOR: ADVICE TO A 1912 BRIDE Thanks to Earl C. ("Cal") Padgett, Jr. Years ago a Kentucky grandmother gave a bride the following recipe for washing clothes 1. Bilt fire in backyard to heat kettle of rain water. 2. Set tubs so smoke wont blow in eyes if wind is pert. 3. Shave one hole cake of lie soap in bilin water. 4. Sort things, make 3 piles. 1 pile white, 1 pile colored, 1 pile work britches and rags. 5. To make starch, stir flour in cool water to smooth, then thin down with bilin water. 6. Take white things, rub dirty spots on board, scrub hard, and then bile. Rub colored, don't bile, just rinch and starch. 7. Take things out of kettle with broomstick handle, then rinch, and starch. 8. Hang old rags on fence. 9. Spread tea towels on grass. 10. Pore rinch water in flower bed. 11. Scrub porch with hot soapy water. 12. Turn tubs upside down. 13. Go put on clean dress, smooth hair with hair combs. Brew cup of tea, sit and rock a spell and count your blessings. Hang this above your automatic washer, and when things look bleak, read it again, and count your blessings! 9.
