Thanks for sharing your stories. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Leaping Across the Big Pond By Adele in Kiwiland pentony@infogen.net.nz I will give you a wonderful thank you for a wonderful site. Now I have been dabbling in family tree off and on for years, but only last year found relations in London. They mentioned about searching in Canada, where maybe there were relations we don't know. I put up a query for anyone with a knowledge about William Fredrick RIDLEY, who died during World War I, to please get in touch. This was posted 23.3.2001. Just three weeks ago, a reply from Ted RIDLEY came -- his grandfather married and died in World War I -- said he was shot in the leg in France and as they hoped he would get better, he was sent to England, but his leg was amputated, and then he died due to blood poisoning. In the meantime, his wife hearing he was ill, sailed from Canada with two young sons, reached England, learned he had died, so she turned around, and returned to Canada, never making contact with family in England at all. Ted's grandfather was my grandmother's "Brother Willie." I have a photo, which I have sent to Ted, of his grandfather standing next to my grandmother in 1896. Now I have cousins I never knew about, and so has he. On another note in my search for descendants of Arch RIDLEY (he was supposed to have worked in Buckingham Palace) it turns out that what I thought was a tall story of my grandmother's, is really true. Brian RIDLEY informs me that my father did work at the palace, his photograph is with one of the famous ones, taken after a bomb hit the palace-- standing next to the then King and Queen, now Queen Mum! And, I had written to Windsor Castle Archives hunting for anything on him, but due to its privacy act, it could not tell me if he had worked there. To think we all lived in London and never knew our cousins -- the incredible RIDLEY clan. When Ted replied to me, I immediately rang one of the newly found cousins in London, and she could not believe it. My message to one and all is never ever give up hope! * * * Serendipity Strikes Again By Carolyn Schulz tylerpup@interl.net Recently I replied to a query posted on RootsWeb. It concerned one of the family members that I was researching and I had some information for the lady. When I mailed her the copies of the documents that I had, she was overjoyed. These documents were the result of a shot-in-the-dark request to McKinley County, New Mexico courthouse with little more than a name and a possible place of death. I was as pleased to share them as I was the day the courthouse called me in Iowa to confirm what I was requesting. Then the lady mailed me a big "thank you" with a request that I try to find something about her grandfather who also lived in New Mexico. Now mind you I live in Iowa, but I went about trying to find something on the Net that she had possibly missed, but in exasperation I gave up and decided I would check my mail before I signed off for the night. There it was, in the RootsWeb Review [RWR 5:7 13 Feb. 2002], that very night -- a new database with the New Mexico death records. I could not believe my eyes. It was if RootsWeb was peeking over my shoulder. I entered the database and you could have knocked me over with a feather when the man I was searching was listed. I quickly e-mailed the lady with the good news suggesting that she too subscribe to RootsWeb Review. She thinks I am some sort of angel, but she is putting the halo on the wrong person. Thank you RootsWeb, and keep up the good work. 2. NEWS AND NOTES ----------------- 2a. RootsWeb Surname List (RSL) recently passed the million-name milestone. So what's RSL? It is a registry of surnames that have been submitted by more than 232,075 online genealogists. Associated with each surname are dates, locations, and information about how to contact the person who submitted the surname. RSL is one of the tools at RootsWeb that you can use to contact others and share information. Best of all -- it's free. Search to learn if there are others working on the same lines and post the family names you are researching. Search the database, add, or edit your previously posted surnames at: http://rsl.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/rslsql.cgi To learn more about RSL visit: http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/help/rsl6.html 2b. YEARBOOKS AND ROSTERS. It's spring-cleaning time -- at least in some parts of our far-flung genealogical world. Time to dust off grandmother's high school yearbook that's been stored in the attic, or fish dad's World War II military roster out of that old trunk. While precious to your family, these records also can be genealogical treasures to others whose family members are named therein. Consider transcribing such valuable information for submission to the RootsWeb's User-Contributed Databases where it will be made searchable and others can find it. Just a few minutes of your time could bring great joy to another researcher. A yearbook transcription for the Alumni Lists, for example, can be as simple as listing the school, the year, the country, county/town/city, state or region, last name (surname) and first (given) name of each individual and any other pertinent information the book may contain about each individual. Do it in consistent, labeled fields. See guidelines and detailed formatting instructions at: http://userdb.rootsweb.com/guidelines.html When ready, submit your database(s) here: http://userdb.rootsweb.com/submit/ 2c. This page has been created in the hope that it will act as a central location for anyone researching a KAUB genealogical connection and further stimulate research into this name. Our goal is to provide an organised, well-documented database for all family lines descending from Christian KAUPP, who arrived in the American colony on board the "Snow Fox" in 1738. One problem encountered in researching this line is that there were several other unrelated families who arrived later, lived in the same areas, and used the same forenames. FROM ROOTSWEB REVIEW'S BOTTOMLESS MAILBAG -------------------------------------------- You Want Fries With That? By Donn Neal neals@shentel.net http://www.user.shentel.net/neals/ There is one aspect of the use of abbreviations that hasn't been mentioned yet. (I refer to the United States Postal Service's ZIP code abbreviations.) Some people seem to think these abbreviations are now appropriate -- or even required -- for other uses when they are not. They were developed for the mechanized sorting of mail, and for similar uses when a standardized, two-letter abbreviation is required for computer entry. The particular aspect I mean is the increased use of these abbreviations at times when a state name is used in another jurisdiction or name. For example, I have seen researchers refer to WA County (Indiana), and to OKC, OK. Would you believe the OH Valley? The CT River? Or PA Avenue in Washington, D.C.? I even saw someone refer to Mark Twain's birthplace as FL, MO. Besides looking atrocious, such usages are inappropriate -- and misleading. Lists using the abbreviations do not alphabetize correctly. And why *should* we reduce proud historical names to characterless bureaucratic abbreviations when there is no need to do so? Is it really worth the fraction of a second it takes to spell the whole name? In my view it is part of the "McDonaldization of America," and I refuse to accept it without protest. * * * Virtual Bouquet for Floridian Jim Powell By Sheila Casper from Fairbanks, Alaska Casperfamily@mosquitonet.com I want to acknowledge and honor Jim Powell for the major contribution he has made to Internet genealogy and family history research. Powell is the coordinator for the FLGENWEB counties of Alachua, Bradford, and Gilchrist counties. In addition he is the Florida assistant state coordinator for FLGENWEB. And, if this was not enough. he changed careers and became the "Ancient Records" coordinator and webmaster of Alachua County, Florida: http://www.rootsweb.com/~flalachu/ His real talent is in motivating people. He has amassed an army of Alachua County, Florida volunteers from all over the United States who have transcribed thousands of pages of documents. Most of these records were unavailable for research, even at the county courthouse, until Powell, with the valuable assistance of the Clerk of the Court, J. K. "Buddy" Irby, made the major commitment of getting the records scanned and online. Some of the Alachua County, Florida records that Powell has scanned, posted, and encouraged volunteers to transcribe (or transcribed himself) include: --Indexed, transcribed, and posted the 1850 and 1860 census. --Maps. --Located old settlements and posted their histories. --Transcribed and posted Deed Books A and B. These are some of the very earliest records of the area. He also made an index for five of the early deed books, and volunteers are transcribing the pages. --Coordinated many volunteers who transcribed the DAR cemetery survey. --Scanned and placed online all marriage record books (1837-1923). Coordinated volunteers to transcribe these records so that they would be searchable. --Scanned and placed online many, many probate files from the earliest times. These probate files are incredibly detailed and are valuable for genealogists and history buffs alike. He created a very user friendly template so that transcription is easier. Volunteers have transcribed many of these images so that they can be searched. --Transcribed the county's first County Commission Book. --Scanned and placed online delayed birth certificates books, bill of sale books, and mortgage books. The above records are all easily searchable thanks to the great search engines Powell has created. As I have researched my HAGUE, LIPSEY, and TIDWELL families in Alachua County, Florida I have gained much insight into their lives from 1825 on. The probate file on my ancestor, John HAGUE or HECK contains about 50 pages. I have learned so much about this family through these records. And, since it was filed under HAGEN, it is doubtful that I would have found it at all if it had not been for Jim Powell. Every time he finds another "HAGUE sighting" he e-mails me. I know he does this for many other researchers. He has my undying gratitude for his service to me and, indeed, everyone researching in Alachua County, Florida. 7. HUMOR: Pining for a Porker --------------------------------- Thanks to Nancy Lambert nlambert@pdnt.com I've been reading a local history about Eugene Township (Indiana) by Harold L. O'Donnell, which was published in 1963. In one chapter he mentions the Chicago and Eastern Illinois (C&EI) Railroad coming to town, and he discusses the danger it was to livestock. "Livestock in the early day were a constant source of trouble between the railroads and the farmers. Stock would be killed and it was, of course, always the fault of the railroads. In one case a farmer had a hog killed by a train and since he believed himself to have some ability as a poet, wrote the railroad claim agent as follows: My razorback strolled down your track, A week ago today. Your #29 came down the line, And snuffed his life away. You can't blame me; the hog you see, Slipped through a cattle gate; So kindly pen a check for ten, The debt to liquidate. He was surprised a few days later to receive the following: Old #29 came down the line, And killed your hog, we know; But razorbacks on railroad tracks, Quite often meet with woe. Therefore, my friend, we cannot send, The check for which you pine, Just plant the dead; place o'er his head; 'Here lies a foolish swine.' " 10.
