News and Notes: ------------------ 1a. Behind the Scenes. Since the end of Volunteer Appreciation Month in April, RootsWeb.com has continued to show its gratitude to volunteers by completing a new spotlight each month. This month RootsWeb spotlights the HelpDesk volunteers who help to make the user experience more successful and enjoyable. For more information on this and about other volunteers who have been spotlighted, see: http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/spotlight/ * * * 1b. Uploading to WorldConnect. Finally your family tree database is ready for submission to WorldConnect and you're eager to get it online. However, before submitting your file, take a few minutes to read the WorldConnect FAQs to familiarize yourself with the submission process. http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/FAQ/wcsubmit1.html WorldConnect only accepts files uploaded in a valid GEDCOM format. While it is the contents of the file that determine whether your family tree is a valid GEDCOM format, and not the file extension's name, the vast majority of GEDCOM files will have the file extension of .GED. The one exception would be if you send your genealogy file as a zipped file (compressed file). In that case, be sure that the file you have selected to "zip" is a valid GEDCOM file and that it is *not* in .FTW, .PAF, or some other format before you zip it. To create a GEDCOM open your genealogy file -- the one in which you input your family tree information. Use the manual that came with your program or read the FAQs for creating a GEDCOM using the most popular software programs available here: http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/FAQ/wcgedcom4.html Pay close attention to the name your genealogy program is creating for the GEDCOM file. You will be asked to name the file or accept your genealogy program's default name, as well as the location where the GEDCOM resides on your computer. Jot down the actual file location (path) -- such as C:\FTW\filename.GED. Yours might be something like: C:\FTW\KRINGLE.GED or D:\PAF\CLAUS\SANTA.GED You will be asked to specify the path (that's the "C:\FTW" or "D:\PAF\CLAUS\" part) to the file later on when you prepare to submit it to WorldConnect. For most submitters actually uploading a family tree GEDCOM to WorldConnect is uneventful and straightforward and only takes a few minutes -- in fact, 90 percent of submitters are able to upload their GEDCOMs in 20 minutes or less. Even a huge file and on a slow Internet connection should not take more than an hour. If you know how to ZIP files, ZIP your GEDCOM before you upload it. That really cuts down on upload time because zipping reduces a file size up to an average of 75 percent. Begin on the main WorldConnect page: http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/ Click on START HERE. Select a user code and password for your account. Because your user code will become part of the URL (Web address) where your GEDCOM will be housed, it cannot contain anything other than alpha-numeric characters, hyphens, and underscores, which are acceptable to browsers, and it should be between three and 16 characters in length. Use a hyphen "-" or an underscore "_" to represent blank spaces when establishing your user code. WorldConnect URLs, user codes, and passwords are all case-sensitive. If you want your user code to be "Frosty Snowman" you must create it as "Frosty-Snowman" or "Frosty_Snowman" -- not "Frosty_snowman" or "frosty-snowman". Select a password that is no longer than 16 characters. Should you receive an error message, even though you have adhered to the above criteria, it probably means that you have selected a user code that is already in use. Try selecting a slightly different one. Every user code must be unique -- there is only one user code per GEDCOM. Click on the STANDARD button to access the Standard Set-Up page as recommended for all first-time submitters. You will be taken to a screen that shows your user code and asks you to type in your full name and e-mail address. Click on SET-UP after you have completed these items. You will be asked to select a variety of options on the Set-Up page concerning the display (what the world sees) of your GEDCOM, and whether or not you wish to allow other researchers to download all or part of your file. As previously noted, you will be asked to locate the GEDCOM you are about to upload on your computer. You can either type-in the path to the GEDCOM: C:\FTW\KRINGLE.GED (or use the BROWSE button to locate it. If you use the browse button, navigate to the GEDCOM, highlight it, and click OPEN to transfer the path information onto the Set-Up page. Three items to complete on the Set-Up page are: Title, Headers, and Footers. These three items appear on every page of your file, so give them careful consideration. Title is required. It introduces researchers to your WorldConnect site. Make it specific, giving clues to the contents of your file and the major families therein -- "My Ancestors" or "The Smith Family" are not good titles. "Descendants of Samuel Smith and Elizabeth Borton of Aynho, Northamptonshire, England" or "Kringles of the North Pole, 1402-2002" are more descriptive and better identify the information in your file. Remember that WorldConnect is accessible to researchers around the world, not just those in your country. Caution: Don't confuse "user code" and Title. The "user code" is selected when establishing a new account and is an identifier for your family tree at WorldConnect. It becomes a part of the URL (Web address) of your file, but it is not the title of your pages. Headers and Footers are optional. If you are uncertain what to use for them, leave them blank. You can always go back through the Set-Up page and add Headers and/or Footers by reprocessing your file. It is not necessary to upload your file again to do this. While you can be creative with Headers and Footers, most contributors use them to provide important additional information about their files, thank and give credit to those who have contributed to the compilation, make links to their personal home pages, or even include counters. Here's a look at some examples of what some WorldConnect contributors have done with their Headers and Footers: http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=millhall http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=racines http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=loganholmes http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=kbonnell http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=cynthiadaigle When you have completed the items on the Set-Up page, click on the UPLOAD/UPDATE button. Wait for the file to upload -- the length of time required for the upload process will depend on the size of the file and the speed of your Internet connection. Average time is 20 minutes or less. There will be a confirmation screen verifying that the process went without a hitch. The confirmation screen provides you with details about your file and a link to your database. Newly uploaded databases are queued for a short period and then become directly accessible. However, information in newly submitted files doesn't become available from a search until the searches are updated each night. If you go to the WorldConnect global search box on the main WorldConnect page and type in the names from your database they won't be found for at least a day after you submit your GEDCOM. So, don't be alarmed if you do not find them immediately. You can still access your database directly at the URL on the confirmation page, or by typing the following URL into your browser window: http://wc.rootsweb.com/~usercode Replace the word "usercode" above with the exact user code (case sensitive) that you selected when you created your account and uploaded the GEDCOM. For example: http://wc.rootsweb.com/~kringle Do not put a closing slash on the URL here. You also can access your database from the main WorldConnect page by typing your user code in the box that says "jump to a specific database" and clicking GO. For example, type in "kringle" (without the quote marks) and click GO. If you should encounter any problems with the uploading process, don't worry. Go to the FAQs on Problem Solving: http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/FAQ/wcsubmit6.html Also, check out: Error Messages: http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/FAW/wcsubmit7.html These pages should provide you with enough help to enable you to resolve most problems. I have received so many e-mails from this. I have found cousins from Sweden, Poland, France, and all over America. I have helped some and others have helped me. Some have been able to help me correct information I had as well. I found one cousin who only posted back a couple generations, but it didn't matter, because she posted one I knew and I found her! Ever so often I search through WorldConnect http://wc.rootsweb.com/ just to see if someone new will pop up. This is a wonderful service, and it is spread even farther by coming up on Ancestry.com as well as on RootsWeb.com. So what are you waiting for, upload your GEDCOMs! 3. News and Notes from Ancestry.com ----------------------------------- Each of the 15 U.S. censuses from 1790 to 1930 provides valuable information that helps to bring success to U.S. researchers. The 1930 census, which just became available to the public this year, includes information that gives clues into the daily lives of Americans, such as where they worked, their military veteran status, and whether or not they owned a radio. The complete 1930 census of the United States could unearth a wealth of information about your past. Ancestry.com is in the process of compiling and releasing an every-name index for the 1930 U.S. census. Most states for this year are now indexed on Ancestry.com. From RootsWeb Review's Bottomless Mailbag [Editor's note: The opinions expressed herein are those of the authors and are not necessarily those of the editor or of RootsWeb.com]. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Tricksters Out of Luck By J. Cunningham JoannC2518@aol.com You may want to mention to your readers that another fraud scheme is currently making the rounds -- this one name-specific. It is apparently a variant of the Nigerian money fund con that has been around for the past several years. My brother was contacted by a Nigerian "attorney" advising him that he was heir to a considerable amount of money as the only surviving relative of someone of the same last name who had died in an auto accident in that country and wishing to represent him in claiming it. No doubt a response would have revealed the requirement for a sum of money for this "representation." Considering the explosion of genealogical information on the Web, it seems the tricksters have discovered what they believe to be a potentially fertile field for their ploys. Too bad they don't know that most genealogists insist on documentation before accepting such claims at face value! * * * Finding Family Graves: A Gift to Pass On By Sharon Lockett salockett@aol.com Finding an abandoned family graveyard in the middle of private property might be easier with ghostly guidance, but we succeeded with research, perseverance, and the generous assistance and kindness of real people. My husband and I decided to look for an old RUDD family graveyard as part of a fall driving trip in the Carolinas. From family lore and online research, I knew that the site existed somewhere in Newberry County, South Carolina. A visit to the state archives in Columbia not only confirmed the location of the cemetery near an old school, but even produced a book with a transcription of the tombstones. We had the virtual graveyard: all that remained was visiting the real one. The Chamber of Commerce housed in one of Newberry’s historic buildings seemed a good place to start. A gracious young man there pulled out more books with maps and tried to help us pin down the cemetery location, without success. He advised us to proceed to the library and talk with the head librarian, "who is kin to most folks around here." The librarian was familiar with the RUDD name, even though the family is no longer in the area. She unrolled several plat maps, looking for the property where the graveyard might be located, but the exact site was still unclear. She advised us to go on down to the crossroads store in that vicinity and talk with the proprietor. A country store is an adventure in itself, and although we received many questioning looks from the regulars, we were welcomed warmly by the proprietor. She knew that Mr. X had bought the old RUDD property, and by the way he came to the store for lunch every day, but meanwhile why didn’t we drive over and talk with the folks who lived on the old school property? They suggested we look at an old family graveyard across the road from the recycling center and about 40 yards into the tall pines and wild rose and brush. A man in a pickup truck advised us to head for the tallest trees, since trees in cemeteries are seldom logged. Unfortunately, the graves had been vandalized and the surname was WELLS (and yes, I have already posted this information on the appropriate RootsWeb mailing list). So we headed back to the crossroads store. Mr. X -- 89 years young and driving an ancient red sedan -- met us at the store. Once he was satisfied that I was related to the RUDDs and that we were serious about our search, he tried to draw a map showing where the graveyard is located on his property. Finally he gave up and told us to follow him, cautioning that he could get through the *big* mud hole in his car, so we probably could also. We entered his property on a rutted gravel road which seemed to fade the further we drove. Having grown up in Texas, my husband and I were familiar with "gate etiquette," so we opened the gate for Mr. X and closed it after both cars had entered. Then we drove through several mud holes, each of which I hoped was the *big* one, and through another gate. We continued across a field (with just the barest hint of tire tracks) and along a fence line and here encountered the *big* mud hole which both cars got through. Soon Mr. X stopped his car near a grove of trees, and there beyond a barbed wire fence was the old RUDD graveyard. One reason I wanted to visit the graves was to take photos to send to my 104-year-old great-aunt in Mississippi, whose grandfather was buried in this old family cemetery. My husband and I entered the graveyard (through a gate provided by a movable fence post) and immediately recognized the tombstones from the transcriptions we found at the archives. We were not prepared to take first-class photos (no extra lights or reflective boards), but I was able to snap some shots to make a picture book for my great- aunt’s birthday gift. Our gift to her was made possible by the many gifts we received during our search for the graveyard, and we were honored to pass it on. 9.
